    Good to know

Corporate tax basics for BC small businesses.

Four numbers every BC owner-manager should know. We confirm your own dates and amounts on the first call.

    • 6 months

A corporation must file its T2 return within six months of the end of its tax year (its fiscal year-end). Any tax owing is usually due earlier.

    • 11%

The combined federal (9%) and BC (2%) rate on active business income that qualifies for the small business deduction, for Canadian-controlled private corporations.

    • $500,000

The BC and federal business limit: the amount of active business income each year that can be taxed at the lower small business rate.

    • Every year

Every resident corporation files a T2 for every tax year, even when there is no tax to pay. A company with no activity still files.

    Questions

    Frequently asked questions.

What kind of accountant do I need for a small business?

If your business is incorporated, you need someone who keeps your books, files your GST and PST, runs payroll if you have staff, and prepares your corporate tax return (T2). Having one firm do all of it means your year-end is built on books it already knows.

How much does a small business accountant cost?

At JHG, a T2 return starts at $800 when your books are done, and a nil T2 is $550. Monthly bookkeeping with your T2 included starts at $195 a month for revenue under $50,000. All prices are before GST, and you get a fixed quote before we start.

When is my corporate tax return due?

A T2 is due within six months of your corporation’s fiscal year-end. For a December 31 year-end, that is June 30. Any tax owing is usually due earlier, so we confirm your dates on the first call.

Is the T2 included with bookkeeping?

Yes. Every monthly bookkeeping plan includes your corporate tax return. The once-a-year option includes the T2 and your GST and PST filing too.

Can I switch accountants partway through the year?

Yes. Send us last year’s T2 and financial statements, and we pick up from wherever your books are now.

Do you work with my accounting software?

Tell us what you use on the first call. If you don’t use any software, bank statements and receipts are enough to start. Comparing options? See our guide to bookkeeping software in Canada.

Should I pay myself salary or dividends?

It depends on your income, your plans and your family situation. We look at it with you as part of your year-end.

Do I need to come into the office?

No. You can send records from your phone or by email, meet by phone or video, and sign electronically. You’re also welcome to visit our Abbotsford office.
